Thank you for making the world a better place!
ODFL stands for "One Dollar For Life".
ODFL is an IRS registered 501(c)3 non-profit corporation founded to address third world poverty by collecting just one dollar from each of millions of US high school students and then channeling those funds into small-scale infrastructure projects in developing countries.
ODFL’s Vision - “A single humanity working to reduce human suffering”
So many of the world’s problems come from believing we’re different. And to be sure, we are all unique. Yet, behind our differences, beneath our different colored skins, we all bleed red. We all have the same longings for personal growth, healthy children, a meaningful life, and a better world. But when we allow others to live in suffering, when it can so easily be changed, we diminish our own humanity, our own selves.
Also, so many of the world’s problems are now “collective.” They can only be solved by all of the world’s people working together. Think of ozone depletion, global warming, species extinction, pandemics. No one of us can solve them. And no one of us can avoid them. Only by working together — as a single humanity — can we begin to address these new generations of problems. Only by reducing all of humanity’s suffering can we bring our own humanity to a higher level.
ODFL’s Philosophy - “The world is made better by creating bigger people. People are made bigger by helping others.”
No amount of “fixes” is going to fix the world. Until we grow its people, it will always revert back to the “I’m getting mine” reality we see today. But a world of bigger people will not allow the horrors we live in today. But people aren’t made bigger by having more “goodies.” No number of clothes, iPods, pimped-out rides, hairdos, toys, or super-sized meals can make us into bigger people. Only helping others can do that.
ODFL allows millions of teenagers to become bigger people by helping others. And isn’t that what we all really want, to become bigger people? Even though the cost is so small — a dollar! — the impact of working together to help others is huge. We WILL create bigger people, we WILL reduce human suffering, and we WILL give birth to a better world. There’s no greater purpose to which any person could ever aspire.
ODFL’s Mission - “Engage the world’s teenagers to improve the quality of life for all of the world’s people.”
Why teenagers? They have the best chance of getting this done. Young children are too young to be effective. And older people are too busy and committed to other agendas. They lack the ideals of teenagers. Really improving the human condition requires an incongruous mixture of effectiveness and idealism. Effective idealism. It only lives in teenagers. But only if we act on it. And only if we enlist millions of others to act as well.
Also, teenagers have the resources — a dollar! — to make ODFL work. Most younger kids don’t have their own money. And many adults are tied up with humongous bills. Only teenagers have the discretion, the imagination, and the daring to say, “Yes, I will commit to making the world better.” In doing so, they’re not made a dollar shorter. They’re a dollar taller. They’re bigger people for daring to believe the world can be made better, and then acting on it.
